Hello, my son John has been given a school project about the region of Molise.
Do you have any information about the history and design of the Flag of Molise? For example, what does the star mean and why is the crest on a blue background?

In positive case, I hope to give you an answer in the next days.

The coat of arms of the Molise region has been approved with regional law no.198 dated January 21st 1978, and it is so described (with a very non-heraldic language) : “ Silver-bordered shield with a diagonal silver bend having in the upper-left area a silver star with eight points, placed in a red field, with a silver writing shaped as a wide semicircle, in the lower part, Molise Region” This emblem originates from the winning proposal of the contest called by the Regional Council in October 1976 which was in turn inspired by the heraldic symbol of the Molise municipality that gave name to a medieval county from which, approximately, the present Region descends; compared with the final symbol the initial project had three red stars placed in the bend and the star in the upper area wasn’t eight-pointed. The three stars were eliminated since they were “a symbol of a specific and historically circumscribed feudal period” and the star got the same eight-pointed shape of the one in the coat of arms of the Molise district (the Campobasso district at present).
Gonfalon and flag. During public events the Region uses a gonfalon made of a light blue drape ending with a convex curve at the center of which lies the regional coat of arms and, under it, the writing “Regione Molise” following a convex way itself. The flag, shaped rectangular, takes up the colour, the writing drawing and the coat of arms of the gonfalon even if, initially, it had a light blue shield instead of a red shield sometimes.
The reason for which the light blue colour had been selected for the flag and for the gonfalon is unknown. Anyway, it is the most used colour (in different gradation) on the insignia for the Provinces and Regions. Moreover the light blue is the colour used in all Italian National representatives for sports competitions and it is present as ‘scarf’ on the uniforms for the Army Italian Officials (refer to (in italian): https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciarpa_azzurra e http://www.esercito.difesa.it/Storia/ISimboli/Pagine/Lasciarpaazzurra.aspx)
